Why Count Your Words and Characters?

A web page title gets truncated beyond roughly 60 characters in search results, a meta description beyond 160, a text message is billed in blocks of 160 characters, and plenty of contests and applications enforce a strict word limit. This counter gives you all of those measurements live, without ever opening a word processor.

The reading time (200 words per minute) and speaking time (130 words per minute) help you calibrate an article, a speech or a video script. And like every tool in our toolbox, the analysis runs entirely in your browser: your text never leaves your device, as explained in our privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the word count calculated?

A word is any run of letters or digits, including hyphenated compounds and contractions with an apostrophe: "don't" counts as one word, and so does "mother-in-law". This matches the way most common word processors count words.

How is the reading time estimated?

Reading time is based on 200 words per minute, the average speed of an adult reading English. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, the typical pace of a measured delivery, which is handy when preparing a speech or a video script.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All counting happens entirely in your browser: the text you analyze is never transmitted, stored or read by us. You can safely analyze confidential documents with complete peace of mind.
